Labia correction

What is a labia correction?
For some women, the inner or small labia are very large and therefore longer than the outer labia. Sometimes they are visible, something that many women find uncomfortable or disfiguring.
With a correction of the labia, also known as a labia reduction or labia correction, the excess tissue is removed. This procedure is not only performed for aesthetic reasons but also for practical reasons. Too large labia can be a nuisance. You may experience discomfort when cycling, playing sports or wearing tight trousers.
Smaller or inner labia
An inner labia reduction is the most common operation on the labia. The surgeon removes the excess tissue from the labia minora, which is usually done under local anaesthesia. An extensive correction can also be carried out. This depends on the length of the inner labia that will be corrected.
Large or outer labia
The labia majora or the outer labia can be enlarged because of excess skin and/or tissue. This surplus can be disturbingly visible in tight trousers, sports and swimming gear, cause (fungal) infections, etc. In this case, excess tissue can be removed.
If the inner labia are larger than the outer labia, lipofilling can help to fill the outer labia. This way, there is a better proportion between the large and small labia, although some of the fat can disappear again. In that case, a second treatment is sometimes necessary.
Procedure - How does a labia correction work?
The plastic surgeon determines beforehand how much tissue must be removed from the labia. This will be indicated with a sterile marker on the labia.
The labia correction can be performed under local anaesthesia or under general anaesthesia.
During the procedure, the excess tissue is removed from the inner labia, the blood vessels are burned (diathermy) and the wound is carefully sutured with a soluble suture that does not have to be removed. In general, this is only a strip of skin of up to three centimetres.
This procedure usually takes about an hour.
The scars are usually invisible.
Advantages
- No more irritation of the labia
- No visible scars
- No discomfort during daily activities, such as cycling and horse riding or during sex
- Less chance of (fungal) infections
- It looks more beautiful.
Disadvantages or complications
Some of the possible complications of surgical treatment may be
- Haematoma (a build-up of blood under the skin that may require removal)
- Negative reaction to the anaesthesia
- Subsequent bleeding
- Infection
- Sensation change in and around the labia
- Permanent visible and/or palpable scars
- Damage to underlying structures
- Unsatisfactory aesthetic result
Recovery - What can you expect after a correction of the labia ?
After-pain
Most people experience little pain after a labia correction. However, the labia can be painful and swollen. Especially the first days after the intervention you must take this into account. Cold compresses can take away the pain and reduce the swelling. You may also experience a slight numbness of the treated area.
Recovery
As after every surgical intervention, the body needs time to recover. The area around the labia will initially be blue, bruised and swollen. The scars can also be red and swollen immediately after the operation. This is a natural reaction of the body.
The labia are well supplied with blood and the wound will heal quickly. On average it will take two weeks to heal. Until then the treated area may feel uncomfortable, tight and tense. This is quite normal and not worrying.
Haematoma and swelling in and around the labia begin to decrease slowly after about three days and in most cases disappear after a few weeks.
After a correction of the labia, some loss of blood can sometimes occur. This is normal and not to be worried. The scars will not bother you much in the end.
Result
It will take some time before you will see the final result of the labia correction. Only after a few weeks or even months, swellings and bruises will disappear and your skin tissue will become less sensitive. The final result will only be visible after a few months. The inner labia will look more naturally and in proportion to the rest of your body. After that, the result will last for years.
Scars will hardly be visible because they are on the inside next to the labia majora. These scars need one to one and a half years to fully settle down.

Also when the areola (the dark area around the nipple) is too large in proportion, this can be surgically corrected.
