What is a nipple correction?
Are you dissatisfied with your nipples or areolas? With a nipple correction or a nipple-areola correction (e.g. a nipple reduction, nipple-areola reduction or the reconstruction of retracted nipples), the shape, size and position can be changed with a relatively small surgery. This operation usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.
Procedure - How does a nipple correction or nipple-areola correction work?
Nipple-areola reduction
The size of your areolas (the pigmented area around your nipple) can change over the years. During a areola reduction, the surgeon reduces the diameter around the nipple.
- Part of the outer rim of the areola is removed and reattached.
- This is often combined with a breast reduction.
Nipple reduction
A nipple reduction is generally performed on women with (excessively) long or protruding nipples. This is often genetically determined, although breastfeeding can also cause this.
- During the surgery, the protruding part of the nipple is removed.
- If there is asymmetry between the nipples, a correction may also be performed to restore symmetry.
Correcting a retracted nipple
There are two different types of retracted nipples:
- The first type is a retracted nipple that is normally shaped but sometimes pulls inwards. Placing a ring under the skin prevents this and is a quick and efficient procedure without scars. The milk ducts remain intact, allowing you to breastfeed without any problems.
- The second type is the poorly constructed retracted nipple. This retracted nipple is more difficult to treat. This problem mainly starts at puberty. In this case, an incision is made in the nipple to loosen the milk ducts. This prevents the ducts from pulling the nipple inwards. After this procedure, you may experience crusting for a few weeks and breastfeeding may no longer be possible.
Advantages
- Nipple correction is a relatively simple procedure. They are usually done under local anaesthesia.
- You can go home the same day.
- You recover fairly quickly after the procedure.
Disadvantages or complications
Any cosmetic procedure may involve potential risks or complications.
Possible risks are:
- Blood accumulation under the skin
- Negative reaction to the anaesthetics
- Wound infection
- Subsequent bleeding
- Permanent scars
- Allergic reaction
- Change of sensation in the breast
- Necrosis of the skin
- Damage to the tissues of the breast
- Inability to breast feed
Recovery - What can you expect after the nipple correction?
- After your nipple correction, you may go home the same day if everything is okay.
- We recommend that you arrange transportation when you go home, driving yourself will not be possible and is strongly discouraged to avoid complications.
- Avoid sports or strenuous exercise for 6 weeks after the operation. Allow your body a few days rest after the operation; your skin and breasts will feel sensitive and stiff. You may take Paracetamol for this.
- Your scars will need six months to a year and a half to calm down. Take good care of them according to the post-operative instructions you will be given and keep them out of the sun or use a sun screen with SPF 50.
- Wear a supportive sports bra for 6 weeks.

Who is a suitable candidate for a nipple correction?
A nipple correction aims to restore the proportions between the breast, the nipple and the areola. When a nipple has a deviant shape and is, for example, (too) large or retracted, a nipple correction may be necessary or desirable. Also when the areola (the dark area around the nipple) is too large in proportion, this can be surgically corrected.
